Measurements of How Bad the Offense is, Part 2: 2012 OPS

There are many ways to measure just how bad the Pirates offense is in 2012. Part 1 was the historically awful K/BB ratio – on pace to be the worst ever, ever, ever in the Majors. Tonight, let’s look at OPS values in 2012 by position (data from baseball-reference.com thru games of 5/23):

Catcher – 10th in the NL and closer to 13th than 9th

First Base – 14th and closer to last than 13th

Second Base – 13th, a solid 13th

Shortstop – 15th, a solid 15th

Third Base – 6th (nearly 5th)

Leftfield – 15th

Centerfield – 2nd (thanks, Cutch!)

Rightfield – 16th

Pitcher – 16th

Pinch Hitters – 16th

Yep, that’s bad. Other than centerfield and third (thanks to Pedro’s ten day barrage), this team is in the bottom half at the other seven positions and nearly in the bottom quarter in the other seven spots. Plus, the team is getting no aid from pinch hitters.
